Securing the best of health for people with learning disability

Martin Stephens, Pharmacy Local Professional Network – Wessex

Want an opportunity to showcase your services? … just to me in the first instance. At the pharmacy LPN in Wessex we are exploring whether there is more to be done to help people with learning disability get more from their medicines and from pharmacy has to offer. It would be great if there are one or two teams around Wessex – in community pharmacy or other settings – who are proud of the interactions and services they provide and are willing for me to come to listen and learn, then perhaps share the learning.

NHS England have identified improving health and outcomes for people with learning disability as a priority – including supporting move from in-patient to living in the community  and helping overcome the barriers which can deter or hinder access to NHS services, whether GPs or pharmacy or secondary care.

The second NHS post I had as a pharmacist included providing services to people with learning disability – who lived in quite large hospital settings. Ensuring safe medicines use and helping with formulations that aided adherence was the focus, moving on to establishing community based settings with supported medicine taking {this was a while ago}. However, I know I’m out of touch with the needs & examples of good practice I’m sure we have in Wessex. So do get in touch if you have something to share martinstephens@nhs.net

There are resources we can use: the CPPE have put together a package to support us in practice {found at: https://www.cppe.ac.uk/programmes/l/learndis-p-01/ } and  the RPS has put together a briefing on optimising medicines for people with learning disability {found at:https://www.rpharms.com/promoting-pharmacy-pdfs/4397---rps---medicines-optimisation-learning-disability-v2-web.pdf }

And finally this article by Anne Cole, CPPE Manager South west,  provides a helpful summary of the issues http://www.rpharms.com/promoting-pharmacy-pdfs/learning-disability-mo-article-160324.pdf
