Hampshire & Isle of Wight Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC) has joined forces with Dorset LPC to launch a brand new training and development resource to support community pharmacy teams across Wessex in delivering high quality services to their local communities.

The health and social care systems in England are currently going through a period of significant change, and the local pharmaceutical committees of Wessex realise that community pharmacy must change with it if the sector is to compete in the new commissioning environment.  The Community Pharmacy Wessex Academy has therefore been established as an accessible central information hub, aiming to support the skills and knowledge development of local community pharmacy staff by collating together relevant tools and useful resources.

The Community Pharmacy Wessex Academy utilises a variety of skills and development models, including face to face workshops, online training, facilitated networking and social media.  The Academy’s dedicated website acts as a central repository to bring together comprehensive information on the services available from community pharmacies across Wessex, and the specific accreditation requirements for delivering them.  The website is also available to support commissioners with local communications, and to coordinate resources on locally commissioned pharmacy services, enabling up-to-date content to be maintained and offering a modern, responsive medium for feedback, networking and sharing good practice.

In addition to signposting pharmacy teams to external training and development programmes, the Community Pharmacy Wessex Academy will also develop and host its own education and training activities.  These will be delivered at a regional level by Local Academy Leads, who will oversee and facilitate local meetings and events, tailored to align with local healthcare priorities and providing a valuable opportunity for dialogue, on both local and national matters, between community pharmacy teams, Local Pharmaceutical Committees and local commissioners.

Paul Bennett, Chief Officer of Hampshire & Isle of Wight LPC, has said, “The Community Pharmacy Wessex Academy provides a strategic approach to meet the evolving training needs of pharmacy teams.  We have no doubt it will prove to be an invaluable information source for both providers and commissioners across Wessex.”
